Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA)

Free Tax Filing Will Be Available January - April 2016

Volunteers are Needed:

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) helps bring back millions of dollars to working families in our community by providing free tax assistance for low and moderate income households. Last year, the Coalition for Working Families helped keep more than $4 million in the pockets of residents by coordinating the VITA program. This success is only possible through a dedicated volunteer base. VITA sites in 2016 will be located at the City’s Hart Senior Center, Sam and Bonnie Pannell Community Center and the South Natomas Community Center. In 2014, the Coalition for Working Families trained and certified nearly 160 volunteers and surpassed all tax season expectations, but still fell short serving all the Sacramento families that needed VITA services. We simply need more volunteers. Please tell your friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers that we need them to volunteer, too! Together we can make sure that working families throughout Sacramento are able to keep their hard-earned money. Classroom or online training is required for all new volunteers. Use the link below to sign up for a specific training location or for the online training. Classroom trainings require four days of training which are listed below in the information about each location.  An optional orientation for online training is available with limited seats on November 7. Please sign up for this orientation if you plan to attend. In addition, open labs will be available on December 5 or 12 only for volunteers who have completed training.  For questions or more information, please contact Diana Clay at  or call 916-368-3059.  To sign up to be a VITA volunteer and for training please visit here.

VITA and TCE Tax Program Schedule

Individuals who wish to do their own taxes without assistance may utilize the Special Portal for the City of Sacramento. This site allows taxpayers to complete federal and up to 2 state returns for free, electronically file and have their refund directly deposited in their account. This service is provided through the City of Sacramento City-wide Volunteer Program in partnership with MyFreeTaxes, United Way Worldwide and Goodwill. Income limit is $62,000 to file federal and state returns for free.

VITA Free Tax Preparation Sites

Those with incomes of $54,000 or less for 2015 qualify for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). VITA volunteers will help prepare federal and state taxes. It is possible to also qualify for additional credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Care Credit and more, which could increase the refund amount.
